FREE Concert on the Old Point Schoolhouse Lawn: Stephen Sanfilippo

Saturday, July 31 | 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Saturday, July 31st @10am (rain date: Sunday, August 1st @ 1pm)

“A Pearl for Oysterponds” – The Unique Sea Song Repertoire of Stephen Sanfilippo – appropriate for audiences of all ages.

For nearly 50 years, Stephen Sanfilippo, a 5th generation Long Islander, has researched and performed the historic songs of Long Islander’s maritime and coastal life, from whaling, fishing, piracy, and shipwreck, to lighthouses, work songs, romantic ballads. Singing unaccompanied, or with guitar, banjo, or concertina, Stephen’s performances capture a sadly forgotten but still vibrantly appealing part of the cultural and social history of the island Walt Whitman called “Fish-shape Paumanok.”

Among the many songs Stephen will present are Captain Sylvester Miller’s 1830s “Cruise of the Bayard, which tells of the adventure of a Greenport whaler, Si Tannhauser’s early 1900s “Spearing Eels” by torchlight on a frozen bay, Long Island versions of chanteys, the work songs of sailors under sail, and Stephen’s own “The Bug Light is Shining Again,” written for the dedication of Orient’s Long Beach Bar Light House.

Bring a blanket or a lawnchair, bug spray, and a picnic!
