SUMMARY:17th Annual Heritage Day: Celebrating America's 250th Birthday
DESCRIPTION:July 5th. The Heritage Day program will start with a parade down Orient’s Village Lane led by the Grand Marshal; followed by a welcome and invocation at the Old Point Schoolhouse; the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance; “God Bless America” sung by Franklin Mastrangelo; the reading of the Declaration of Independence by Oysterponds stalwarts; after which there’ll be hot dogs\, sweets\, kids’ games\, and live music in Poquatuck Park. \n  \nSarah Olmstead & Catherine Craig-Chaudhuri\, Co-Chairs \n  \nThe history of Heritage Day: Local schoolmaster\, tavern keeper\, store owner\, diarist\, and Oysterponds native-son Augustus Griffin (1767-1866) began a tradition of the reading of the Declaration of Independence every July 4th. Many years later\, that simple ceremony has grown into Heritage Day—an annual opportunity to fully acknowledge the innumerable generations of Oysterponders who came before us—starting with those who first settled the East End over 10\,000 years ago. \n  \nOysterponds Historical Society celebrates all of Oysterponds history—the people and the lives they lived and the artifacts and stories that have been handed down to us in the 21st century.

DESCRIPTION:Coming this Saturday\, August 1st!  The OHS Summer Benefit & Auction returns to one of the East End’s most beautiful settings—Poquatuck Park\, overlooking Orient Harbor at sunset. Enjoy elegant appetizers (including oysters on the half-shell!)\, cocktails and wines\, and live music with family\, friends\, and neighbors. \nTickets are no longer available online. If you’d like to attend\, you must purchase ticket(s) in person\, at the event. \nThere’ll be an exciting live auction plus a silent auction featuring a specially-curated selection of unique experiences and one-of-a-kind items. SUMMARY:Free Movie Night: "Twister"
DESCRIPTION:August 22nd. \nShown in conjunction with “The Weather” – Barbara Bloom’s Exhibition in the Old Point Schoolhouse. \nBefore the tornado hits the screen at Poquatuck Hall\, come see another creative depiction of weather. Barbara Bloom’s exhibition\, “The Weather\,” on view now in the Old Point Schoolhouse until September 27th\, reimagines seascape paintings from the OHS collection—sky and sea half-hidden\, leaving only a glimpse of the drama or calm within. Accompanying these are gray-green-blue carpets\, hovering above the floor\, with raised-dot Braille texts\, each with a different literary description of the weather. The exhibition accentuates the complexity of seeing… leaving much to the imagination. \nThen join us for a FREE screening of Twister\, the 1996 Hollywood blockbuster that puts you right in the eye of the storm. OHS presents two very different ways to reckon with the weather: quiet\, contemplative\, and partial\, then loud\, visceral\, and total. \n

SUMMARY:6th Annual NY Mutuals vs Oysterponders Vintage Baseball Game
DESCRIPTION:Sept. 12th.  Root\, root\, root for the home team! For the sixth year in a row\, OHS will be hosting a vintage baseball game featuring a friendly-but-fierce competition between the powerful visiting NY Mutuals and a proud-but-ragtag team of Oysterponds irregulars. \n  \nThe New York Mutuals Baseball Club fields a team in authentic replica uniforms and plays an actual nine-inning game–following bygone-era rules–using replica old-time equipment. Following the game\, they’ll give the children in the audience a chance to play and swing a bat in a game called rounders. \n
