1776AR: Revolutionary War Augmented Reality Tour - Oysterponds Historical Society

Note that even when the Oysterponds Historical Society and/or its exhibitions are closed, visitors can still access the program and take the tour.

Upon downloading the app, the next time you’re on the OHS campus you’ll be able to embark on a fascinating 30-minute augmented reality tour guided by key Revolutionary War-era community figures. You’ll see and hear from the following:

Teacher, storekeeper, innkeeper, and diarist Augustus Griffin.

Merchant, husband, father of nine, innkeeper, and owner of the Webb House, Orange Webb.

Supporter of the patriot cause James Griffing, who escaped being captured by British soldiers by jumping out of his 2nd floor window.

Two courageous Oysterponds women, Mrs. Deborah Townsend and Mrs. Corwin, who fought back against the occupying British soldiers, valiantly protecting family and property.

After downloading the app, step foot onto the OHS campus in Orient, open the app, follow the directions to the six inscribed markers, scan each marker with your phone, and engrossing local history will come to life! (Though they are not required, we recommend the use of headphones or earbuds for an optimal experience.)

Oysterponds Historical Society’s Revolutionary War augmented reality program was made possible by a generous grant from the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation.

Oysterponds Historical Society (OHS) is one of more than a dozen Long Island museums and historical societies now offering visitors the free 1776AR app to create immersive learning experiences through the use of augmented reality.

Each app has been developed in conjunction with historians at participating institutions and highlights little-known stories tied to one of three historical themes: the American Revolution, the African American experience, and Theodore Roosevelt. The museum apps are part of the Long Island “Digital Tapestry” initiative, developed by the technology company 360XR and funded by the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation.
