Every October a sailboat race sails out Shelter Island Yacht Club that circumnavigates Shelter Island. On the afternoon this photograph was taken, waves were cresting at five feet. One of the sailboats in this photograph took on a large wave and sank.

 

EJ Camp is a renowned photographer living in New York City and Orient, NY. The East Coast seas and landscape as well as the surf of the California coastline are her favorite subjects for her work. Camp is internationally known for her iconic movie posters and magazine covers. Her work spans three decades and her images have graced movie posters including Top Gun and Forrest Gump. She has also photographed cultural icons such as Annie Lennox, Debbie Harry and Billy Idol for the cover of Rolling Stone. As a photographer and avid sailor, Camp’s work is informed by her interest in the sea and the myriad faces of water. These subjects, as part of her fine art practice, have been acquired for private collections and shown in solo and group exhibitions at galleries in New York, Los Angeles, and Miami.

Barbara Bloom is an artist who lives in New York and Orient, Long Island. She has received numerous fellowships and awards, including the Getty Research Institute Fellowship; Guggenheim Fellowship; The Venice Biennale Due Mille Prize. Her work has been shown internationally, including exhibitions at MoMA, NY; Serpentine Gallery, London; MoCA, Los Angeles; The Metropolitan Museum, NY; The International Center of Photography, NY; The Jewish Museum, NY.

Esteemed as one of the foremost graphic artists of his era, Ivan Chermayeff created some of the late-20^th Century’s most recognizable corporate logos, including those of the cable channel Showtime, the publisher HarperCollins, the Smithsonian Institution, and The Big Apple Circus, among many others. One of his most celebrated designs was the three-dimensional sidewalk sculpture — an immense number 9 in red steel — that marks the entrance to 9 West 57th Street in Manhattan.

 

Mr. Chermayeff also designed posters, created museum and gallery displays, and illustrated children’s books. Away from the office he was known for making collages in which he cheerfully married strange bedfellows (buttons and boot jacks, work gloves and pebbles, airline luggage tags and canceled stamps) as if to counter the cool minimalism of his 9-to-5 life. His art in a variety of mediums has been exhibited around the world.

 

The son of Serge Chermayeff, a distinguished Russian-born architect, Ivan Chermayeff studied at Harvard and what is now the IIT Institute of Design in Chicago and earned a bachelor of fine arts degree from Yale. A past president of the American Institute of Graphic Arts, Mr. Chermayeff was the recipient of gold medals from the institute and from the Society of Illustrators. He was named to the Art Directors Club Hall of Fame in 1981.

Invite nine of your closest friends for drinks in OHS’s Webb House, an elegant example of late-18th century American architecture, adjacent to Orient’s beautiful Poquatuck Park. Besides wine, cocktails, and beer, there’ll be a bountiful selection of appetizers from Duryea’s, Little Fish, Ellen’s on Front, and platter of clams, oysters and shrimp from Southold Fish Market.

 

About Webb House: The entire structure was moved (for a second time!) in 1955 by barge from Greenport to its present location in Orient, became part of OHS in the 1980s, and today is decorated and period-furnished as it was during its late-18th and 19th century heyday. A Maritime Exhibition is on permanent display on the 2nd floor.

 

Legend has it that one General George Washington once stopped by Webb House for tea when it was inn; but… we cannot tell a lie, unfortunately there is no substantive proof. Maybe, just maybe, his ghost will join you and your guests for a most pleasant soiree!
